I have been doing a lot of relaxing photography around my home town for a change,  I am really enjoying it. Coatbridge, is my home, I know I speak a lot about it’s past, but hey, why not?, you should read up on its industrial importance, to not only Scotland but the UK as a whole, it’s earned it’s place in folklore,  it is a legendary wee town indeed.

The generation that exists now, don’t really understand it’s significance and embarrassingly even though it’s home to Europe’s noisiest museum, Summerlee Heritage Park, not all residents have been to visit this totally underrated piece of nostalgia. Only a few days ago I was speaking to a resident of the town, they asked what I was doing at the weekend, I explained taking the kids to Summerlee to see the Halloween stuff, and he said to me, “I’ve never been in that place, and don’t think I ever will”…

Eh?, wow…. honestly, if you live here you need to at least visit this place once, it amazing and FREE!!!, it has an outstanding play park, you can easily lose a few hours without even noticing, something for everyone, a lovely canal, great history, beautiful walks  the list goes on. Or we could all sit on facebook and greet about the big bad people who run the area, or worse still, believe what the papers say about the town. 😉  get out and enjoy your own town..believe it or not it stretches past the bridge of eternal stench of pish (ASDA bridge)

As far as modern towns go, it’s doing not bad…capitalism has moved the town center to Faraday retail park, we need to deal with that….people haven’t just stopped shopping in the main street..the main street has moved, nothing is ever going to bring it back….the main street is now Faraday Park, and if you’ve never noticed, it is pretty decent , the shops are great, everything we asked for is there…only a Primark and everyone is happy 🙂 ….

The potential to convert the original main street is huge, it could be lovely wee town houses, possibly (please blow up the Asda side and make the historic side visible from every road you drive…the Asda side is bloody awful) , artistic hubs, even pop up one stop shops and encourage retailers from all over the world to come to showcase their talents, have each empty shop fitted to specialise in things, kitchens, studio space, empty space..who knows!..the potential is huge with the correct direction… we really need a town hall, theatre thing..turn the quadrant into this, make it a buzzing cultural hall, music, Pantos the works, get people flowing through the town center again.

One things for sure, I really don’t want to go to Summerlee to look at the Whitelaw Fountain :/, but maybe this is where it will end up…..it’s easy to sit and downplay our wee town, to slate it, slag it, but I am not playing that game…I am going to love bomb it for a while, cause you know what, Coatbridge has been kind to me, In this town I met the love of my life, who gave me my amazing kids, to name a few things, I want my kids to enjoy this town as much as I do….. I even bought a magic storage drive from Currys/PC World to store my photos, manged to get some xmas shopping from Argos, and then into Tesco to get the Sunday dinner in….the towns evolved…time we all evolved with it…

Yes NLC and it planning decisions really burst my karma, but on the other side, as much as I hate to admit….Faraday is a resounding success,  they must have played a role in that. Someone just needs to get creative to make sure we preserve the old main street, or evolve it into something that doesn’t look like the shop window of an estate agents, banning supermarkets from selling Alcohol, newspapers/magazines and Butcher meat, would have significant implications on the future of business, good implications, might seem extreme, but remember a time when you went to the butchers, into Haddows, then the newsagents before picking up the chicken nuggets from farmfoods…….just saying like… hopefully positive thoughts come from this blog….

Anyway here is some pictures, today I played with double exposure to try and capture the industrial atmosphere this town once had, and a few ones of the kids enjoying themselves…why not 🙂
