A wee wander about Glasgow brought me to this wee fella, strutting his stuff, and some great Street action, after stalking him with my camera for a bit which I think he found bizarre, considering I didn’t take the opportunity to say hello first as it made it more raw, I liked that he was unsure if I was snapping him or not, meant he was a captive street model. Occasionally he gave me the look that all people often give me which is a “WTF??”. I like that, keep the subjects guessing, and then when it becomes blatantly obvious as to what the hell I am doing, I then take the time to explain that I ain’t no freak, well I am, but it would scare him if I admitted it.
I tell him I’m a photographer and I can see the “Oh aye” look people often give, I then see him eyeing my apparatus, my sleek and sexy wee Fuji XE1, (my banjo, it’s silly pet name as you do). I notice that other look when they see I don’t have a big imposing DSLR, almost waiting for the Crocodile Dundee moment for him to say “That ain’t a camera, this is a camera!” as he whips out his big toy. But no he casually looks me up and down still unsure of me, and says in his very polite articulate voice, “yeah, I was looking for a photographer”. Well here I am, I claim, still watching his uncertainty, only one thing left to do to ease this poor soul. I show him my facebook page (as much as I hate it, sometimes it is a handy tool to show), I also made sure he wasn’t going to whip my expensive smart phone from my very grip, as you need to be alert in the fine city of Glasgow, opportunity is often dressed as a fool….and that day I was a fool. I made the mistake of wearing your typical stereo type beast photographer attire as I was at meetings and had to be presentable.
I had on my black trench coat (oh dear) looking like a cross between the child snatcher and Neo from the matrix. (handsome all the same). anyway as I will always do I am drifting from the scene. Turns out I found a great wee Street model, and almost all shots were candid and fly (evil laugh). Turns out the youngling I had just shot is none other than a Gregor Russell a professional football freestyler based in Glasgow ranked Top 8 in the UK and Ireland. Pretty impressive. After dazzling him with my talent on my facebook page we swooped pleasantries and a promise that if he liked these shots, we can do it again only this time venture further into the city center, so fingers crossed he likes what I have produced for him and me.
